E-Mobility NSR

North Sea Region Electric Mobility Network (E-Mobility NSR)

Background and Aim

Aim

The project´s main aim was to increase regional accessibility in the North Sea Region by fostering e-mobility and stimulating the use of electric car transport across the region including the utilisation of electric vehicles in urban freight.

A main result was that electric cars could be used to travel across the North Sea Region more easily. The project helped the EU in meeting its climate commitments and unlocking the potential for substantial investments in the fields of e-mobility.

Background

The area of electric mobility (e-mobility) is a fast growing field and one of great strategic value to the North Sea Region. This is so because it not only helps to foster the scientific and technological development in the North Sea Region in an area of strategic interest, but also because it supports regional economic development and assists towards increasing its accessibility and achieving greater territorial integration. Furthermore, e-mobility contributes to reducing CO2 emissions and helps the EU to achieve the goal of reducing its emissions by 20% until the year 2020.

Several regions and cities in the North Sea Region seek to develop strategies and action plans to stimulate e-mobility by encouraging the use of electric cars for local transport. However, these activities are not fine-tuned or interlinked, meaning that valuable human and financial resources are not being put to full use. This limits the concept of e-mobility to individual cities or regions and leads to a limited use of e-mobility between these cities or regions, which characterises an untapped potential.

Therefore, the project aimed to develop the conditions to steer current and future developments, connect the various networks to form a true transnational “backbone” or “grid” within the North Sea Region for e-mobility and increase accessibility in the region.
